Why Asian Renaissance ?
We all know that European Renaissance, or the revival of the interests in the European classical literatures and cultures of Greece and Rome, when transformed into a powerful intellectual movement, not only metamorphosed the middle-aged Europe into the modern West to give a fresh impetus to the modern entrepreneurship and scientific explorations, but has also determined, directed and dictated the entire course of the human history during the past two centuries.
Unfortunately, the Western Renaissance has an ugly facet that has prompted insidious devaluation of the human dignity and values with lustful Colonial policies and subordination of science and technology to Totalitarianism.
Furthermore, the materialistic rat race also inflicted irreparable damages to our social institutional fabrics that exacerbate in broken families and marriages; abandonment of the children and old citizens and so on.
The Asian Renaissance, in turn, seeks to ‘cherish the ancient and relish the modern’; ‘foster the best and discard the worst’; ‘repair the damages and replenish the human values by the spirit of reason and humanitarian wisdom enshrined in the teachings of the Buddha and Confucius; the sciences of Aryabhat and Varhamihira ...
The Facets of Buddhism is a 'pioneering' work that deals with diverse themes on Buddhism by way of their multicultural, secular, humanitarian, feminist and democratic stances. It also embodies their language policy underlying the Buddha's famous quote on the "instructions by way of one's own language" (sak¡ya niruttiy¡). Furtherm the book underlines the Buddhist Anthropological assertions underlying oneness of the human race and their ecological concern - that today echoes in the scientists' announcement of the arrival of the Anthropocene Age due to our delusive understanding (moha) or Wrong Vision (micch¡ di¶¶hi) which the Buddhists always laboured to replace by Right Vision (samm¡ di¶¶hi)...
A Handbook of Buddhist Pedagogy shows as to how do the Buddhists apply the sixteen modes of communications (h¡ra) by way of the analyses of the six syntactical phrasings(byaµjana pad¡ni), namely, Letter (akkhara), Term (pada), Phrasing (byaµjana), Etymology (nirutti), Demonstration or Descriptive Analysis (niddesa), Syntax or mood (¡k¡ra) to arrive at the original meaning of the texts for any meaningful interpretation or translation of a primary text.
Besides, the book by way of its methodology for semantic analysis of the teachings of the Buddha - viz., Exposition (sa´k¡san¡), Explanation (pak¡san¡), Description (vivara¸¡); Analysis (vibhajjan¡); stepwise classification (utt¡ni-kamma); Conceptualisation (paµµatti) is demonstrative of discovering the roots of good or bad actions.
The Buddhist Analysis of Mind is a sincere attempt to explain every term and concept of Buddhist Philosophy, Psychology and Cognitive Science in the modern philosophical language in readable English. Also, the book draws parallels with Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Husserl and other philosophers for better appreciation of the complex concepts of the Buddhists discussed in the most original and primary sources.
"Dr. Varma [in this Dictionary] pays careful attention to literal and contextual interpretation, with ample references to primary and secondary literature and to the history of important concepts. In sum, Dr. Varma’s work is a brief modern compendium that, I think, should be quite useful to serious students of Buddhism."
